Year At A Glance 2007
January 2007
The Council's
4th kick Off Breakfast/Meeting was a great success, with
special speakers, Jo Buckles, Lu Young, Lisa Hamilton, and
county judge Ed Philman. The entire membership voted
unanimously to have the ALERT Academy unit 36 here for a work
week. It was planned to have them serve the widows, elderly,
and disabled veteran. Arnold and Geri Jackson, owners of
"Faith Place" at Otter Springs, invited the unit to tent camp
on the grounds at the RV park With financial contributions
from local individuals and businesses food was obtained as
well as bottled water and implements to serve the food. The
Gilchrist Rotary Club invited the unit to a luncheon meeting
on Monday night after they arrived. Three churches invited a
few men from each unit to attend their Wednesday Night Family
Supper and to speak about the academy. There was a Youth Rally
on Friday evening a week after the unit arrived. That Saturday
Evening there was a covered dish dinner for the team at the
lodge of "Faith Place." The members of the Character council
attended as well.
February 2007
The council
sponsored the Alert Team Unit 36, from Big Sandy TX. which
performed demolition work and cleanup and small repairs for
widows, elderly couples, and disabled veterans of Gilchrist
County. There were over 100 individuals and businesses as well
as five local churches who pitched in to make the week such a
marvelous success. There were 514 sandwiches made, 54 loaves
of bread consumed, 80 pounds of ground meat was cooked and
served as well as 3 turkeys, 5 pounds of oatmeal, 10.5 pounds
of cheese, 240 mouth-watering biscuits with honey60 oatmeal
raisin cookies, 6 cases of canned fruit, 28 gallons of juice
and tea, and 10 cases of bottled water were inhaled by these
hard working young men. A special bond was created between
those who came to serve and those who served them. It was a
week which will never be forgotten!
March 2007 - July 2007
Regular
Membership meetings were held. The Town of Bell City Council
was encouraged to sign a resolution to be a "City of
Character" The resolution was signed in April 2007. Three
meetings per year were established to be held at the Bell
Community Center on various dates at 6pm.
August 2007
The 5th annual
"Community Character Forum" was sponsored by the C.C. Doug
Murr, a national "Character First" Associate Advisor and Mrs.
Rose Mary Flagler, of Progress Energy Corp. were keynote
speakers. Three teens from Bell High School J.R.O.T.C. also
gave talks about why certain character qualities were
important to them.
September 2007
There are
currently thirteen Council Committees which have chairmen and
all are active in promoting the positive character agenda of
the council.
October 2007
The Character
Council of Gilchrest County acted as primary sponsor for the
Loomis Brothers Circus on October 26th and 27th. This event's
purpose was to raise money so Character T-Shirts could be
ordered and distributed to elementary school "Citizen of the
Month" winners.
November 2007
For the 5th year in a row
the Character Council sponsored a "Three Ring Toss" kids game
booth at the 27th annual "Down Home Days" Arts and Crafts
Festival. The festival was sponsored by The Church of the
Nazarene.
December 2007
The Character
Council sponsored a float in the annual Bell Christmas Parade
and won a trophy for the theme, "A Storybook Christmas." We
can now boast of over 50 people on it's email and regular
mailing list.
